The Peabody Companies Awarded Management Contract for Tent City Apartments and Warren Apartments on Dartmouth Street in Boston

12/21/20

The Peabody Companies, a group of award-winning property management and real estate firms, announces that it has been awarded the management contract for Tent City Apartments at 130 Dartmouth Street in Boston, a 269-unit, mixed-income apartment complex with over 700 residents and Warren Apartments, which is comprised of several brownstone buildings with 30 one-bedroom apartments.

Tent City Apartments is so named as an homage to its place in Boston history. On April 27, 1968, hundreds of demonstrators occupied a parking lot in the South End in protest of houses that had recently been demolished on the site and the subsequent displacement of occupants. To protest the “urban renewal” project, neighborhood activists created a temporary “tent city.”

Thousands of supporters spent four days on the site, and although they eventually left, the struggle for affordable housing in Boston continued. It took 20 years, but their persistence paid off with that parking lot eventually transformed into the Tent City Apartment development.

“The Peabody Companies looks forward to adding Tent City Apartments and Warren Apartments to our managed portfolio,” said Melissa Fish Crane, principal and chief operating officer. “This mixed-income complex, with a diverse cultural and economic population, stands as testament to the role Bostonians played in the development of their neighborhood. It is a tribute to those who successfully fought to ensure affordable housing in the city they call home.”
