Datasafe Selected by Town of Hingham Accountant’s Office to Arrange for Secure Destruction of Financial Documents

Datasafe Information Security, greater Boston’s longest operating independent document destruction firm focused on the secure shredding of documents, computers and electronic devices with an eye toward preserving security, has been retained by the Town of Hingham to assist the Town Accountant’s office with the secure disposal of financial documents that are no longer needed.

With the increased awareness of what can happen when financial information falls into the wrong hands, more and more municipalities are opting to engage the services of a company which provides secure shredding and destruction of documents. The Town of Hingham has been following this practice for quite some time, but recently switched its provider to the South Shore based Datasafe.

Susan Nickerson, Hingham’s Town Accountant, said that they use Datasafe (destruction.com) to routinely destroy documents containing financial information that the town no longer needs to store. She said that the documents include invoices from vendors to the Town of Hingham. “Some of these documents contain Social Security or other ID numbers,” she noted.

She said that the shredding process follows a protocol where someone from the office will bring the documents to the Datasafe vehicle, which comes to their site, and watch the material being destroyed. She said that the company comes to Hingham approximately once every four weeks. “We store the documents securely in the Town Hall until it’s time to have them destroyed and then we call Datasafe.”

Nickerson mentioned that the town had previously used a different shredding service, which was subsequently acquired by one of the larger companies, “and we saw a decline in service. It prompted us to go elsewhere for our needs.”

She said, “Our experience with Datasafe/destruction.com has been very positive. They are polite, courteous and treat us very well.” She added, “And they are extremely accommodating.”

Rick Carey, the firm’s founder, said, “We are pleased to be able to work with the Town of Hingham and help them securely destroy these paper documents.” He noted that, in his company’s 29 years in business, they have securely shredded 550 million documents, with no identity theft or breaches.

Firm founder Rick Carey launched Datasafe (destruction.com) after a career in security and law enforcement in 1990. Clients Datasafe has worked with in the past three decades include Harvard, Xerox, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

As the firm approaches its 30th anniversary (in 2020), Datasafe has seen its mission expand from the destruction of paper goods to include electronics (including computer hard drives), expired foods, counterfeit goods, and defective products, to name some items. They are one of the last remaining document destruction firms in the state under independent ownership. Datasafe provides destruction for industries across a wide range of businesses, and they differentiate themselves from the competition with their commitment to an impenetrable chain of secure custody of documents and a strong local emphasis on personalized customer service. The firm is in the process of rebranding itself to Destruction.com, a Datasafe Company, which will take place after the first of the year.
