The Saunders School Apartments, a 16-apartment supportive housing community for formerly homeless families, received the award for “exemplary development for residents with special needs” during the recent NEAHMA Annual Industry Awards reception, held in conjunction with the organization’s 29th Annual Fall Conference.
The COQ awards honor the achievement of affordable housing providers who make an unprecedented contribution to developing outstanding properties for families of modest means.
The Saunders School Apartments provides a variety of service plans to help formerly homeless families achieve self-sufficiency. Individual plans and wrap-around supportive services coordinated by the on-site Resident Service Coordinator include daycare, job search, parental mentoring, ESOL, GED and community college classes at Northern Essex Community College.

The Saunders School Apartments has in the past been selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a promising model for ending homelessness and recognized by Homes for Families and UMass Boston’s Center for Social Policy as a change agent in addressing family homelessness.
