Diamonds, Colored Gemstones & Antique Jewelry Realize $2.5M at Skinner Important Jewelry Auction

10/1/18

The Skinner September 25th Important Jewelry auction saw a curated auction of diamonds, colored stones, and antique and period jewelry. Combined with a concurrent online offering, the sale realized strong results. Bidders from across the United States and around the globe vied for jewelry sourced for the auction from estates and private collections.

The top five lots were dominated by diamonds and colored gemstones, including a Cartier Art Deco Platinum and Diamond Bracelet, that sold for $141,000. A Platinum, Sapphire, and Diamond Bracelet, set with three cushion-cut Kashmir sapphires, sold for $123,000 after competitive bidding on the phone and online. It had a presale estimate of $10,000 to $15,000 attesting to the strong demand for scarce Kashmir sapphires. Other top-performing diamonds included a Cartier Art Moderne Platinum, Ruby, and Diamond Bracelet, c. late 1930s, with invisibly set rubies and full- and baguette-cut diamonds, joined to a tubogas chain that sold for $123,000, well above the presale estimate of $30,000-50,000; and an Antique Diamond Riviere, set with thirty-seven old mine-cut diamonds sold for $104,550 against an estimate of $40,00-60,000.

Skinner's Jewelry department has built a reputation for achieving strong results for fine quality antique and period jewelry and for fine colored gemstones. The market strength for colored stones was clearly evident as a Fine Antique Emerald and Diamond Ring exceeded presale expectations following competitive bidding to sell for $43,050 against a presale estimate of $5,000 to $7,000. Other vintage highlights include a Rene Boivin Art Deco Platinum, Onyx, and Diamond Ring, France which sold for $28,290. Jewelry by Luxury brands were well represented in the auction with a Van Cleef and Arpels 18kt Gold and Diamond "Angel Hair" Necklace, France, c. 1947 selling for $33,825; Contemporary designer jewelry included examples by Art Smith, Arthur King and Evelyn Clothier, with a Gem-set Necklace, Evelyn Clothier selling for $18,450. A 1960s 18kt Gold, Turquoise, Lapis, and Diamond Necklace by Marianne Ostier outperformed its estimate to sell for $17,220.
