South Shore Habitat for Humanity will host a home dedication ceremony for the new home of Martin-Lyons family at 2 p.m. at 66 Lake Shore Drive in Duxbury.
A tour of the home will follow the ceremony. Construction began at the location in early December, and over the next six months the house was built with the volunteer effort of local residents, corporate partners and members of the faith community.
The Martin-Lyons family put in “sweat equity hours” alongside local volunteers on the construction of their home. Family Partners purchase the home and receive a 30-year, zero-interest mortgage and each home does have a perpetual deed restriction that maintains the affordability status of each home. Habitat Family Partners are selected through a competitive process based on their ability to pay, willingness to partner and need for adequate housing. South Shore Habitat for Humanity offers a “hand-up, not a hand-out.” “Habitat doesn’t build these homes, communities build these homes,” said Martine Taylor, Executive Director of South Shore Habitat for Humanity.“We are so very grateful to all of our donors and supporters for making this home ownership opportunity available for our newest family partners.”
The home on Lake Shore Drive is the 58th home built since South Shore Habitat for Humanity began in 1986. Construction has also begun on a six-unit subdivision on Temple Street in Duxbury, MA.
South Shore Habitat for Humanity is working in partnership with the Town of Duxbury’s Affordable Housing Trust (DAHT) on the Temple Street project, which is comprised of three duplexes. A new road named Feinberg Bog Road will allow access to the property which will sit on 2.91 acres that was formerly part of Camp Wing. The 2 bedroom townhomes will have approximately 1,200 square feet. Three of the townhomes will be low income homes and the other three will be moderate income homes.
