Pickard Chilton, an award-winning architecture studio best known for its innovative and cutting-edge design of corporate headquarters and campuses, announced the 2018 Pickard Chilton Traveling Fellowship recipient, Rachel Howlett AIA.

The Pickard Chilton Traveling Fellowship was established in response to the firm’s continuous commitment to social responsibility, innovation, and mentorship. The Fellowship grants a member of the Pickard Chilton studio the opportunity to travel for up to ten days to develop their academic interests through research and exploration in a global locale of their choice. Upon their return, the Fellow shares their findings in a presentation to the entire studio, broadening their colleagues’ design perspectives and knowledge of the culture studied.

A jury comprising Pickard Chilton Principals Jon Pickard FAIA, RIBA; Anthony Markese FAIA, RIBA, LEED AP;Pickard Chilton Designer Rodney Nelson; and guest juror Harold Roth FAIA selected Howlett as the recipient of the 2018 Traveling Fellowship based on her thesis that examines the functionality and details of 20th Century Nordic design and architecture. She will travel to five cities across Finland and Sweden to study the work of Alvar Aalto and Gunnar Asplund, as well as other contemporary Scandinavian designers. Howlett will share her experiences and observations in a studio-wide conversation upon her return this summer.

“We are thrilled to announce Rachel as this year’s recipient of the Travelling Fellowship,” said Jon Pickard. “We invite challenges to our own practice and believe that, as one of many initiatives that push our studio forward, this Fellowship broadens and informs design innovation. Rachel is an outstanding member of our studio and we look forward to her return from Scandinavia and to learning from her travels and new perspectives."

Howlett is currently serving as Project Manager for 900 New York Avenue, a next-generation office building in Washington, DC. She has been an active member of design teams for a variety of large scale projects and master plans in Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Chicago, Seattle, and Houston.
