Former DIY Network Stars “Dean& Derek” Return to ABX with focus on inspiring the industry’s next generation
Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns of Plymouth Quarries are returning to this year’s ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX), November 6th and 7th, 2019, with a new design challenge for Landscape Architecture students. ABX, the largest architecture, buildingand design tradeshow and conference in the Northeast, attracts 8,000 architects, builders, contractors and design professionals each year.
Marsico and Stearns, former DIY Network stars and leading experts in the stone industry with over three decades of experience, are challenging students to plan a maximum of 1200 sq. ft. residential design space that must:
- Include at least 1 living space with a defined function
- Include a mixture of concrete and natural hardscape products
- Incorporate at least 1 boulder
- Have some type of covering or partial covering
- Be partial or all permeable
- Include a recycled product
- Include at least 1 EXCLUSIVES product from Plymouth Quarries
- Include a landscape design and plant list
Submission Requirements:
- Design must be to-scale and printable in a PDF Format
- Sheet size to be horizontal Arch D – 24” x 36”
- Student to determine scale of drawing. Scale should be appropriate for viewing from 6’
Submissions will be accepted from September 3 -- October 17, 2019, and finalists will be invited to ABX at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center on November 6th and 7th. Stearns and Marsico will be judging all entries personally via a “Shark Tank”- like expert panel. There will be a 1st and 2nd place prize for both Undergraduate and Graduate students, who will be awarded onsite.
Stearns and Marsico will also exhibit new products to the market and hold daily educational discussions about their expertise working with natural stones with a focus on interior and exterior architectural design. They will be located inBooth 546at their very own custom-designed 1000 sq. ft booth made from all the exclusive products from Plymouth Quarries. Featuring 3000 lb. boulders, Ocean Floor Stone Tables, beautiful Limestone from Croatia, recycled Granites and their historical Weymouth Granite, there will be plenty to see and touch in their interactive booth.
