Krista Manna, AIA, principal of KR Architecture and Interiors, has been chosen to design an addition for a Norwell home which recently earned the Norwell Historical Commission Preservation Award.

Manna has been selected to design a connector addition located between the historic home and a new garage.

The home, a historic property owned by Harry Merritt, was completely renovated over a two year period with new plumbing, electrical work, sills, windows, exterior, paint and insulation. The home was at one time attached to the barn at 126 Prospect St., the building was used by the Groce Truck Factory in the 1850s to build trucks for a variety of needs. In 1870, the building was moved to 29 Prospect Street.

Over the years, there have been additions to the house, including a saltbox to the back of the barn.

Merritt also is constructing a new post and beam barn later this year that is the same style of construction as the home. Manna is coordinating with the barn builder in order to make the whole design seamless. Between the post and beam garage and the historic home itself will be the two story 16x24 connector piece which Manna has designed. The first floor will be living space including an open kitchen, and upstairs a master suite including a bedroom, bathroom and closet space.

She added, “The connector piece is the bridge between the renovated older historical part of the home and the new post and beam garage. The goal is to create a garage & addition that seem like they’ve always been there.” She added, ‘It has been an honor to be part of this project,’ said Manna, adding, “Historic renovation allows a homeowner the chance to be truly creative and still preserve the authenticity of a home that has been through so much history.”
