A sure sign of summer – Fished Impressions and Joe’s Fresh Fish Prints is now open at their newest location on Tuna Wharf in Rockport, according to Joe Higgins. The shop, open from10 am to 5 pm, seven days a week and offer framed original and archival prints, placemats and apparel.
The Fresh Fish Prints are made using the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, Gyotaku, a practice which dates back to the mid-1800s and was originally used to record and commemorate a fisherman’s catch. This form of nature printing has become an art form of its own.

It utilizes fish, sea creatures or similar subjects as printing “plates” in its process. The literal translation of the word is “fish stone rubbing”.
Higgins commented that, “I’m the only working studio and gallery that specializes in fish prints in New England as well as offering print making classes. And probably the only one on the East Coast where you can print your own fish.”

Fresh Fish Prints are also available in Salem on Wharf Street, at the Fresh Fish Shack on Rocky Neck in Gloucester as well as retailers in Kennebunkport, Maine; Scituate, Mass. and a variety of locations on Cape Cod.
