Veteran property management professional becomes General Manager of South Station bus terminal

Michael Smith, Avison Young Principal and Managing Director of the company’s Boston office, announced today the strategic hiring of Edward Araujo.

Effective immediately, Araujo, a 19-year industry veteran, becomes a General Manager in Boston. He will oversee the day-to-day operations at the South Station bus terminal, which is operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), where Avison Young has provided property management services since 2014. These services include building maintenance and repairs, construction supervision, tenant-request services, management and administration of vendor contracts, preparation of annual operating plans and budgets, tenant relations, cash-flow management, facilities management and cost savings.

“Avison Young is thrilled to welcome Edward to the team,” comments Smith. “The South Station bus terminal is an important Boston transportation center, and Edward is the perfect candidate to ensure the terminal runs smoothly, and to continue our relationship with the MBTA, tenants and employees who keep the station running.”

Most recently, Araujo served as a Senior Property Manager at Capitol Realty Group in Boston, where he oversaw the day-to-day operations of 1500-plus residential condominium and rental units. Prior to that, he managed the contracts of retail and restaurant concessions in various terminals at Logan Airport in Boston in roles at BAA Boston, Inc. and Westfield Management Group.

“I am excited to serve as the new General Manager of the South Station bus terminal,” says Araujo. “As a native Bostonian, I am well aware of the importance of public transportation to our city, and the South Station bus terminal plays an integral role. Avison Young will work hard to provide a new level of customer service by upgrading existing amenities, adding new retail and food concession options and looking for new ways to heighten the bus traveling experience. It is the shared goal of the on-site Avison Young staff, many South Station employees and myself to ensure each traveler’s visit through our terminal is as pleasant and as comfortable as can be.”

Located at 700 Atlantic Avenue, the South Station bus terminal serves as the main gateway for inter-city buses in and out of Boston. More than 12,000 passengers pass through the bus terminal each day from the 10 inter-city bus companies that operate out of South Station. The station contains a variety of amenities for passengers, including a newsstand and snack bar, three fast-food outlets, and a 220-car public parkade on the roof.
