The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Kleinfelder as a winner of their 2016 Bronze Engineering Excellence Award for work on the Salem Commuter Rail Station Improvements in Salem, Massachusetts.
The 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at the recent ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala with emcees MA State Senator Karen Spilka and MA Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack.
Kleinfelder, with offices in Cambridge, Springfield and Framingham, Massachusetts was retained by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to implement improvements at the Salem Commuter Rail Station, including a five-level parking garage to replace an existing parking lot, a pedestrian bridge to replace an existing stairway connecting track level with downtown Salem, two accessible elevators and a full-length accessible high-level platform. The unique site and subsurface conditions required additional coordination between the design and construction teams to maximize cost and schedule efficiency. These methods allowed the project to move forward, ultimately saving the MBTA millions of dollars in construction costs.
“The winning projects exemplify ingenuity and professionalism and represent the breadth of engineering’s contribution to our everyday lives,” said ACEC/MA President David Vivilecchia. “They are outstanding examples of how engineers connect communities, provide safe and reliable water and energy, and make our buildings safe and efficient. The professional engineers and their colleagues at our member firms are dedicated to working on quality infrastructure, which wouldn’t otherwise exist. These outstanding projects are but a few examples of the quality work designed by Massachusetts and Rhode Island engineering firms.”
