DLA Piper is pleased to announce that attorney Robert P. Sherman of the firm’s Boston office received a 2019 Adams Pro Bono Publico Award from the Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
The award honors recipients for their outstanding commitment to providing pro bono legal services for those in need. Sherman was recognized for his exceptional commitment to pro bono service, devoting nearly 500 hours of volunteer legal work in 2018 on a variety of legal projects, including reuniting two families from Honduras who were separated at the border in Texas, providing leadership and support for DLA Piper's pro bono partnership with the Lenny Zakim Fund, and leading DLA Piper teams providing trial advocacy training to police prosecutors in Eastern Caribbean countries through the firm’s nonprofit affiliate, New Perimeter.
“Rob’s focus on serving the public interest has been a constant throughout his legal career,” said Lisa Dewey, pro bono partner and director of New Perimeter. “His early work on civil rights has informed his deep, long-standing dedication to pro bono and increasing access to justice, both at a local level and on a global scale. Both his clients and the firm have benefitted from his outstanding leadership on pro bono matters.”

More recently, Sherman represented a young man held in solitary confinement for more than three and a half years as a pretrial detainee in South Carolina in a claim for compensation. The case was resolved at mediation in August 2019.
Sherman is a trial lawyer with extensive white collar experience consulting with and representing corporations and individuals accused of such federal offenses as healthcare fraud and securities fraud. He has successfully tried many complex civil and criminal jury and non-jury cases in both the federal and state courts.
