ACEC/MA Announces Stantec as a Winner of their 2020 Silver Engineering Excellence Award

12/6/20

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Stantec as a winner of their 2020 Silver Engineering Excellence Award for their work on the Woods Memorial Bridge connecting Everett and Medford, MA. Stantec supported MassDOT as the prime consultant responsible for design and construction phase engineering services.

The 2020 Engineering Excellence Awards were recently announced and will be celebrated at the 2021 ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala. The awards celebrate innovation, ingenuity, and excellence in engineering achievement.

MassDOT’s Woods Memorial Bridge project replaced two functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridges on a heavily traveled corridor through Everett/Medford, MA. The Route 16 Revere Beach Parkway Corridor, a major connector roadway between I-93, Route 1 and Route 1A north of Boston, is travelled by more than 73,000 vehicles per day. The Revere Beach Parkway is a historic parkway and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As a result, it was important to balance historical requirements with functionality and low impacts to the public on this project, showing the project team’s commitment to all aspects of design. The new Woods Memorial Bridge is identified as a significant contributing feature of the Parkway, and was voted a top-ten bridge by Road and Bridge Magazine (2019).

“The Engineering Excellence Awards program recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate a high degree of achievement, value and ingenuity,” said Jennifer Howe, President of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts and Principal and Vice President at SMMA, Symmes Maini & McKee Associates. “Entrants are rated by an independent panel of judges from the architectural community, the construction industry, academia, the media, and the public sector on the basis of uniqueness and originality; future value to the profession and perception by the public; social, economic and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of the client/owner’s need, including schedule and budget. We congratulate them and thank them for their contributions to improving the quality of our everyday lives.”
