Road to Responsibility (RTR), one of the region’s largest and most successful nonprofit organizations supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, announced today their recent collaboration with Planned Lifetime Assistance Network of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Inc. (PLAN of MA & RI).
Based in Needham, PLAN of MA & RI is a nonprofit organization proudly serving people with disabilities – lifelong or related to illness, injury, or age – helping them to preserve assets, to protect access to public benefits, and to live well by operating special needs pooled trusts. PLAN offers individuals with disabilities, including the elderly, a lower-cost approach to special needs trusts.
In addition to serving as a sponsor for the recent 32nd annual Making Lives Better Gala, PLAN of MA & RI donated a week at Grotonwood (a $1,000 value), a Christian camp and conference center located in Groton, Mass., that offers a treasure trove of outdoor fun and recreation for adults with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities.
Lara Brait, one of RTR’s longtime supporters, made the winning bid for the week of camp, and then donated it back to the organization for the benefit of an RTR individual. The organization selected an individual who attends RTR’s day services programs and lives in an RTR residence; this person will attend the camp in July 2021.
“Road to Responsibility is a valued member of our community, here in Marshfield, and throughout the South Shore,” said Brait. “I’m proud to support RTR, and so glad to see this partnership with PLAN materialize and grow stronger. Together these two organizations are doing so much for intellectually and developmentally disabled members of our community.”
“We enjoy helping people like the selected individual who may not have the opportunity to attend camp,” said Joan McGrath, executive director of PLAN of MA and RI. “Our mission here at PLAN is to help families secure the financial future of their loved one with special needs, but that doesn’t mean not having any fun! This donation is very much aligned with our efforts to help people live their best lives. We hope this chosen person has a ball this summer!
“Additionally, we are so excited to establish a stronger working relationship with Road to Responsibility,” added McGrath. “Their work helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is in the same vein as our own work, and we realize there is much we may be able to learn from and support each other,” she said.
“We’re thrilled to see this relationship develop,” said Christopher White, Ed.D., CEO of Road to Responsibility. “RTR and PLAN are so similar in terms of our constituencies served, we are so grateful for their support and look forward to a growing collaborative relationship in the months and years ahead!”
About Road to Responsibility, Inc.
Celebrating over 30 years of making lives better, Road to Responsibility, Inc. (RTR) was established in 1988 with the overarching belief that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities deserve to have full, rich, and rewarding lives in the community, and therefore works to provide the means, the opportunity, and the support necessary to allow citizens with disabilities to take their place as productive members of the community. RTR offers residential, work/employment, day habilitation and other day supports to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. RTR supports individuals with very diverse needs, including those with significant challenges who would otherwise go unserved if not for RTR. It succeeds where other organizations often fail, through the use of an integrated clinical behavioral approach. This model has proven successful and yielded positive results for the organization and the individuals served.
Road to Responsibility offers services to almost all the towns and communities throughout the South Shore and South Coast of Massachusetts, operates 48 residences as well as co-operative and supportive living apartments, and manages nine day-service locations that focus on education, employment, and community enrichment.
