General Electric's New Avenue For Growth

GE Healthcare is a major operating segment of General Electric (GE). With revenue of $18.29 billion in 2016, it’s one of the company’s largest operations. But what it does to get its revenue is spread across an array of different products and services. One such piece of the business that management has worked on improving, and that has the potential to generate attractive performance for the business in the years to come, is its ultrasound operations.

Ultrasound makes sense

There exist a number of applications where ultrasound technology makes sense not only from a health outcome perspective, but from an economic one as well. Take, for instance, a procedure known as a thoracentesis. When it becomes necessary to remove either air or fluid from the pleural space, this procedure, which involves inserting a needle into the thorax, risks creating what’s called pneumothorax. This is a condition where air gets trapped between the lung and the wall of the chest.
