Sacred Heart Teacher and Daughter Organize Language Project Between Sacred Heart and Spanish Students

12/4/17

Sacred Heart School, a private, Catholic, co-educational school in Kingston for students in preschool through grade 12, has launched a language project between 5th and 6th graders at Sacred Heart and their counterparts in Colegio CEIP Valdepalitos, a public bilingual elementary school in Alcobendas, Spain.

The program is the brainchild of Kimberly Balaschi, a Sacred Heart Spanish teacher, Preschool – grade 6 and her daughter Anna Balaschi, also a Spanish teacher presently instructing English to Preschool – grade 6 students in the city of Alcobendas, located near Madrid.

Exchanges between the students will be posted on a Google Blogger; Sacred Heart students will write in English, while students from Colegio CEIP Valdepalitos will scribe in Spanish, allowing both groups exposure to their target language.

Kimberly and Anna Balaschi will initiate the program by exchanging group photos of the 5th and 6th grade classes. Students will each hold a decorated name placard to introduce themselves; the program will feature a monthly topic of discussion to address with their new friends, such as after school activities, hobbies, favorite foods, life at school, holidays, and family.

“What a fun and creative way to study a foreign language!” said Interim Elementary School Principal Shaun Morgan. “Not only will students at Sacred Heart and Colegio CEIP Valdepalitos become better versed in Spanish and English, they will also make friendships that may last a lifetime.”
