“Protecting Data in the Healthcare Industry” Paper Addresses Latest Best Practices as Healthcare Records Become Increasingly Attractive Target for Cyber Criminals

Ipswitch®, the leader in easy to deploy, manage and use file transfer and network management software, announced that the 15-page white paper, “Protecting Data in the Healthcare Industry: An Osterman Research White Paper,” has been released. The healthcare industry is among the most attractive targets for cybercriminals because of the high value of the information it manages. The paper, sponsored by Ipswitch, examines the regulatory landscape for healthcare firms, the risks that drive cyber security threats and outlines what healthcare organizations should be doing now to strengthen cyber security defenses.

The healthcare industry has a set of characteristics that make it particularly ideal for all kinds of cyber attacks, including the fact that stealing healthcare records is a lucrative business because of the inclusion of personal, medical and financial information. Additionally, victimized organizations, such as hospitals, are often willing to pay ransomware demands. Healthcare systems are also normally easier to penetrate and disable because of a general level of underinvestment in cyber security, and there is a lack of security expertise in the healthcare industry.

Meanwhile, despite all of the regulatory requirements around data privacy, security and preventing data breaches of personally identifiable health information, breaches have become all too common. For example, the survey conducted for this white paper found that 17 percent of the organizations have suffered a breach of healthcare-related data during the previous 12 months. Additionally, 41 percent of organizations use “only some” encryption/tokenization of healthcare-related data at rest in systems and applications.

“The healthcare industry has a significant number of trends that are converging to increase data privacy and security threats,” said Kevin Conklin, VP of Product Marketing at Ipswitch. “There are a number of steps that healthcare organizations can take – focused on implementing appropriate strategies, policies, processes and training that will mitigate much of the risk, making it a less attractive target for cyber criminals. Hundreds of healthcare organizations have been depending on Ipswitch MOVEit® suite of products to deliver scalable, secure and compliant patient care and business services, particularly for data protection regulations like PCI, HIPAA or GDPR.”
